Part 1 of 2 in a series focused on helping distribution centers reduce energy consumption and demand

If you’re the facilities manager of a large retail distribution center, you understand the many energy challenges associated with conditioning large interior spaces with a significant flow of heat in and out. Implementing measures such as ceiling-mounted fans, automated lighting controls, and additional insulation can help save energy while keeping employees comfortable. Beyond these conventional tactics, however, there remains room for improvement. Even modern, state-of-the-art distribution centers that have been architecturally designed for energy efficiency can benefit from the unique and proven energy management solution developed by Encycle. Its Swarm Logic® IoT-based software changes energy-hungry HVAC rooftop units into “smart” assets, saving typical customers 10% to 20% on energy consumption and demand.

Encycle recently helped a well-known international clothing retailer customer gain control over energy use and waste in its massive 1.8 million-square-foot distribution warehouse. Equipped with 115 HVAC rooftop units (RTUs), the customer was an early adopter of solar power and battery storage systems to improve energy efficiency. Nevertheless, the customer was still searching for an energy management solution that would provide insight and visibility into the operation of its HVAC equipment and enhance its sustainability programs without interfering in the operation of the existing setup.

Working swiftly and seamlessly, Encycle installed its patented Swarm Logic technology, helping the customer achieve similar benefits as a building automation system at a fraction of the cost and without the need for additional equipment.

  • The details of the retail giant’s HVAC energy savings are detailed in a new Encycle case study that reveals:
  • Unique challenges of the large warehouse site
  • Swarm Logic installation and site details
  • Total annual savings in terms of dollars, peak demand, and kWh reduction
  • Demand response (DR) incentives added as a result of Swarm Logic’s ability to simplify DR tasks
  • Annual reduction of CO2 emissions in tons
