Encycle Says Goodbye to Mark Kerbel

Encycle has lost its CTO, co-founder and a good friend. The technology world has lost a visionary and entrepreneur with a strong and abiding passion for clean energy and environmental sustainability. Our much-loved and highly respected Mark Kerbel passed away on November 29, surrounded by family and friends, after a long and valiant battle with cancer.

Mark founded the company in 2005, applying his highly creative intelligence to develop and patent the Swarm Logic technology that is the foundation of Encycle’s success.

With a long professional background in Ontario’s energy and financial sectors, Mark’s focus on energy issues spanned such diverse concepts as consumption attitudes, regulatory frameworks, waste reduction, low-emission transportation power sources, economic constraints, renewable technologies, distributed generation and industry participant attitudes. His philosophy centered around what he called “environmental capitalism,” about which he said, “There’s nothing that says you can’t have an economically profitable business that can’t simultaneously be a socially and environmentally responsible organization.” That was his ultimate business goal and his reason for founding Encycle.

Mark’s intelligence, enthusiasm and expertise made him a highly sought after speaker and thought-leader on the topic of emergent systems theory and its application to smart grid and smart buildings technologies. He was a member of many high-profile energy sector organizations, including the DOE-sponsored GridWise Architecture Council, OpenADR Alliance’s Marketing Working Group, the Peak Load Management Alliance (PLMA) and the Ontario Energy Board’s Electronic Business Transaction Standards Working Group.

Mark also advised the Technology Joint Sector Committee of the Ontario Energy Association, the Smart Meter Initiative of the Ontario Energy Board and the Regulated Price Plan Initiative of the Ontario Energy Board.

Mark made a deep and positive mark on the world. He will be profoundly missed.
