Heating, ventilating and air conditioning accounts for as much as 35% of the energy used in commercial buildings. Finding new ways to stay connected and in control of HVAC operations is growing increasingly important when considering today’s rising energy costs and growing pressure to meet sustainability goals.

While the shift from mercury-switch thermostats to programmable thermostats was significant, today’s facility managers are now relying on “smart” or “connected” thermostats to achieve next-generation control and energy efficiency. Depending on the brand and features, commercial Wi-Fi connected thermostats cost between $250 and $500 to purchase and install. This relatively low investment results in HVAC energy savings of 5 to 10 percent due to the thermostats’ ability to apply temperature setpoints based on a building’s scheduled occupancy status and, in some cases, the ability to lower humidity levels.

To achieve even greater cost savings for commercial and industrial customers, Carrier, a world leader in high-technology HVAC solutions, has collaborated with Encycle Corporation to deliver a powerful interface that connects the Carrier Connect™ thermostat into Encycle’s networked, cloud-based system, which has produced additional HVAC energy consumption and demand savings of 10 to 20 percent.

Encycle is a technology company focused on helping commercial and industrial companies dramatically improve the efficiency of their HVAC systems using IoT-enabled technology. Working in tandem with Carrier’s Connect thermostat, Encycle’s unique Swarm Logic® software dynamically synchronizes HVAC rooftop units (RTUs), enabling them to operate more efficiently in response to changing conditions such as outdoor temperature and building occupancy levels. RTUs become part of an IoT-based closed-loop system that coordinates their activity, distributing energy consumption more logically among the individual RTUs without the need for additional hardware or equipment in most cases.

The Carrier Connect Wi-Fi commercial thermostat offers an impressive range of features that include:

  • Elegant design that blends easily into any building’s décor
  • Vibrant color capacitive touchscreen with full-color LCD swipe and scroll screens that are easy to navigate
  • Built-in humidity sensor
  • Web portal access
  • Adjustable scheduling
  • Local access security
  • Alert notifications
